Janice Schoultz Mudd

Acrylic paint, mixed mediums and collaged objects, are the primary materials Janice employs in constructing abstract, landscape based explorations. Her paintings perch at the intersection of recognizable imagery and the abstract, giving voice to the spiritual and temporal confluence of the world we inhabit. Among her several series of work, you will find paintings inspired by satellite imagery, space telescopes, geologic exploration, the connection between ancient and modern cililizations, and the almighty leaf and seed.

What makes these paintings so special is a luminous quality to the color that draws one’s eye to the canvas and moves it effortlessly, unfolding a unique vision of landscape. Each painting contains many layers of acrylic color glazes that give an apparent depth to the surface; Textural elements are incorporated through the addition of materials and objects, and by subtraction of surface using scratching, scraping and writing. Look at a distance and look up close; there is much to be seen and experienced at both levels.
