Call it art with an agenda. One of the earliest and most recognizable practitioners of commercial art was Czech painter and illustrator <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alphonse_Mucha\">Alphonse Mucha<\/a> (1860-1939).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8875\" style=\"width: 340px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alphonsemucha.co.uk\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8875\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8875 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/Chocolat-Ideal-Alphonse-Mucha-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"330\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.ie\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/11\/Chocolat-Ideal-Alphonse-Mucha-300x400.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.zatista.ie\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/11\/Chocolat-Ideal-Alphonse-Mucha.jpg 338w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8875\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chocolat Ideal by Alphonse Mucha on alphonsemucha.co.uk<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mucha was active in Paris in the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> century and most famous for his decorative work in what became known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Art_Nouveau\">Art Nouveau<\/a> style. He had many followers and imitators, but in spite of his success with commercial work, preferred to think of himself as a serious painter of more substantial works with a spiritual message.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8876\" style=\"width: 341px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henri_de_Toulouse-Lautrec\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8876\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8876 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/383px-Lautrec_moulin_rouge_la_goulue_poster_1891-255x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"520\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8876\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Moulin Rouge la Goulue by Toulouse Lautrec on wikipedia.org<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Contemporary <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henri_de_Toulouse-Lautrec\">Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec<\/a> (1864-1901) also created commercial art while establishing himself as a serious painter on a par with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vangoghgallery.com\/\">Van Gogh<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_C%C3%A9zanne\">Cezanne<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Gauguin\">Gauguin<\/a>. His posters, advertising\u00a0places such as the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moulin_Rouge\">Moulin Rouge<\/a>, are just as recognizable today as his fine art portraits of bohemian life inside the cabarets and brothels of the time.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8877\" style=\"width: 355px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hapshash_and_the_Coloured_Coat\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8877\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8877 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/11\/Hapshash-UFO.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"345\" height=\"505\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8877\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Poster for Pink Floyd concert by Hapshash and the Coloured Coat on wikipedia.org<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mucha and Lautrec continue to influence artists today. Much work has been done in connection with concert promotion that is reminiscent of these artists.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hapshash_and_the_Coloured_Coat\">Hapshash and the Coloured Coat<\/a>, the collective name of a graphic design and musical partnership between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.revelinnewyork.com\/blog\/11\/04\/2009\/michael-english-nigel-waymouth-were-hapshash-the-coloured-coat\">Michael English and Nigel Waymouth<\/a>, produced <a title=\"Psychedelic art\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psychedelia\">psychedelic<\/a> posters promoting musical happenings in London in the 1960s. These works became so popular that they helped establish posters as art for sale in local shops, and their value has increased over time as they appear in museums as both artifacts of the era and artworks in their own right.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8878\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Harvey_(artist)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8878\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/11\/Paul_Harvey_Punk_Victorian.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.ie\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/11\/Paul_Harvey_Punk_Victorian.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.zatista.ie\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/11\/Paul_Harvey_Punk_Victorian-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8878\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Punk Victorian by Paul Harvey on wikipedia.org<\/p><\/div>\n<p>British musician and artist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Harvey_(artist)\">Paul Harvey<\/a> creates works that draw equally from both the world of music and art, depicting modern celebrities in the Mucha style. He has even created campaign posters for the same firm that once employed Mucha.
