Milestones such as the 10-year anniversary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/September_11_attacks\">9\/11 terrorist attacks<\/a> in the United States help bring such events back to public attention. For many of us, artwork depicting the devastating effects of wars in other countries or centuries is the only meaningful experience we have of these occurrences.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8139\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Wright_of_Derby\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8139\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8139\" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/735px-Joseph_Wright_of_Derby_-_Vesuvius_from_Portici-400x325.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"325\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8139\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vesuvius from Portici by Joseph Wright on Wikepedia.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Horrible circumstances tend to bring out the worst and the best in people and often end up highlighting the resilient nature of the human race in all its contradictions and complexities. Strangers become friends in an attempt to rebuild a community that has been wounded. It can help survivors cope with the unbearable and it can honor the memory of those who did not survive.
