Today, Salem is a bustling tourist town home to one of the best art museums in the country, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pem.org\/\">Peabody Essex\u00a0Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The museum found its early origins in the formation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_India_Marine_Society\">East India Marine Society<\/a>, which was founded in 1799. Essentially, this group was formed by Salem shipping captains and served as a depository for \u201ccultural curiosities\u201d collected during sea voyages. Over time, the organization morphed into what is today\u2019s Peabody Essex Museum (PEM).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7452\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7452\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7452  \" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG_1639-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Brian Sylvester<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The museum\u2019s permanent collection has over a million pieces of African, Asian, maritime, Native American and Oceanic artwork that enables visitors to transcend time and experience many cultures. Recently, a collection of Dutch and Flemish masterworks was a large draw to the museum.\u00a0 The current installation featuring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.manraytrust.com\/\">Man Ray<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leemiller.co.uk\/index.aspx\">Lee Miller<\/a> has been just as popular.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7455\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7455\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7455 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG_1663-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7455\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Brian Sylvester<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One of the PEM\u2019s unique features is a 200 year old Chinese house called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pem.org\/sites\/yinyutang\/\">Yin Yu Tang<\/a> that was brought over from China and rebuilt on site at the museum using traditional methods. Visitors can tour the house and the accompanying exhibit showing the history of its origins and reconstruction.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7456\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7456\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7456 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.zatista.com\/art\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/IMG_1646-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"400\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7456\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Brian Sylvester<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Like many museums, the PEM has an interactive section that is enjoyed by children and adults alike.
