This gives the artists free reign to express their creativity any way they feel inspired to. Organic abstract art is a subgenre that is depicted as rounded, abstract shapes inspired by those found in nature. Organic abstraction is also sometimes referred to as biomorphic abstraction due to its curvilinear, flowing form that reminds us of the lush world around us.

A History of Organic Abstraction

The style of organic abstract art was first seen in the mid 20th century, arising as a reprieve from the popularity of the severe constructivist movement which was inspired by urban elements. Organic abstract art was a breakaway from the prevailing attitude among intellectuals in Europe at the time, which favored reason and science. Instead, it favored the shapes and forms found in nature, whether it be the smallest details on a newly sprouted leaf, or larger concepts such as sacred geometry found in animals, rock forms, and the galaxy. Some of the popular artists best known for organic abstraction were sculptors Henry Moore, Jean Arp and Constantin Brâncuși, as well as architects Eero Saarinen and even Frank Lloyd Wright in his design for the Guggenheim Museum.

Featured Works

We’ve selected some of our favorite organic abstract pieces, pulled from our curated collection. These pieces are a representation of modern organic abstraction and showcase the range of this style.

Bubbles set X -II by Jessica M.
