Text by KAT HERRIMAN, Photographs and Video by JASON SCHMIDT for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/05\/16\/t-magazine\/art\/venice-biennale-best-highlights-mark-bradford-tehching-hsieh-alicja-kwade.html?_r=0\">New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 413px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.widewalls.ch\/mark-bradford-venice-biennale-2017\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/d2jv9003bew7ag.cloudfront.net\/uploads\/United-States-Pavilion-at-the-Venice-Biennale-2015-via-newyorkaise-com.jpg\" width=\"403\" height=\"269\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">United States Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2015, via newyorkaise.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The United States Pavilion:<br \/>\nAmerican artist Mark Bradford&#8217;s installation forces visitors to enter the building from the left rather than through the imposing front door marked with columns. \u201cI don\u2019t think progressive ideas ever come through the front door,\u201d Bradford says. \u201cWe always come through the side door, through the window, through the tunnel we bore, we struggle for our identities.\u201d One of the works,&nbsp;Bradford says, \u201cis a cliffhanger. It is about having a hope in something that you can\u2019t see, which is the future, and acknowledging where I\u2019ve been.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 411px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/05\/16\/t-magazine\/art\/venice-biennale-best-highlights-mark-bradford-tehching-hsieh-alicja-kwade.html?_r=0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2017\/05\/15\/t-magazine\/art\/Venice-slide-95NC\/Venice-slide-95NC-jumbo.jpg\" width=\"401\" height=\"321\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rachel Rose, photographed with her work in Venice. Credit: Jason Schmidt<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rachel Rose\u2019s \u201cLake Valley\u201d Installation:<br \/>\nThis work features an animated video about a pet left home alone,&nbsp;and&nbsp;<span data-reactid=\"119\">is like stumbling into someone else\u2019s dream.&nbsp;Rose\u2019s animation is layered with thousands of 19th-century illustrations which she lifted from children\u2019s books; these patterns bleed into one another to form the landscape of the garden where the creature escapes to as well as its home. Almost psychedelic in its movements, \u201cLake Valley\u201d leaves the audience with a sense of unease that feels at once fresh and familiar.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/moussemagazine.it\/anne-imhof-faust-german-pavilion-venice-biennale-2017\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/moussemagazine.it\/app\/uploads\/02-Anne-Imhof-%C2%A9-Nadine-Fraczkowski_E9B0888.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anne Imhof, Faust, 2017 at German Pavilion, Venice Biennale, 2017\u2028 Courtesy: the artist and German Pavilion 2017. Photo: \u00a9 Nadine Fraczkowski<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The German Pavilion:<br \/>\nAnne Imhof\u2019s German pavilion might best be described as an immersive painting composed of actors, Doberman pinschers and sculptures. The living installation is set into motion by a troupe of sharp-eyed artists, musicians and dancers who Imhof has continually collaborated with. You can feel their chemistry. It\u2019s contagious.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/05\/16\/t-magazine\/art\/venice-biennale-best-highlights-mark-bradford-tehching-hsieh-alicja-kwade.html?_r=0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/images\/2017\/05\/15\/t-magazine\/art\/Venice-slide-YCMH\/Venice-slide-YCMH-jumbo.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"320\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Phyllida Barlow with her sculptures in the British pavilion. Credit: Jason Schmidt<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The British Pavilion:<br \/>\nPhyllida Barlow\u2019s works press the viewer to look up and consider their own size. \u201cI have a desire to reach beyond the standard eye-level experience,\u201d she says of her pieces\u2019 scale. \u201cI make the sections my size so I can have contact with them continuously, but once they start to assemble they become grand. It\u2019s like the studio is a rehearsal, but we have no idea what we are rehearsing. We don\u2019t even know what the play is, let alone the script.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 411px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.designboom.com\/art\/erwin-wurm-venice-art-biennale-austrian-pavilion-one-minute-sculptures-05-15-2017\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designboom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/wurm-1800.jpg\" width=\"401\" height=\"145\"><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">performative one minute sculpture | truck, mixed media | h 874 x w 240 x l 274 cm h 344 x w 94 1\/2 x 107 3\/4 in photo studio erwin wurm \u00a9 pretty, vienna 2017<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Austrian Pavilion:<br \/>\nErwin Wurm\u2019s work at the Austrian pavilion conflates two waves: the moment when Homo sapiens first arrived in Europe via the Mediterranean and the rise of Italian tourism in the 1970s. A camper with holes cut into its exterior sits in a white room with its parts and furniture scattered across the floor; each presents a perch for meditation.&nbsp;\u201cWhen tourists flocked to Italy in the \u201970s, their caravans were not only their living rooms, but their bedrooms, their toilets and their kitchens,\u201d Wurm says. \u201cThey didn\u2019t even need to have contact with the people living there \u2014 they brought it all themselves. I wanted to give people the chance to escape, levitate and in a way infiltrate the life of this camper.
